Police are at the scene of a fallen tree on State Highway 2 near Bethlehem.

It is understood the tree is blocking a lane on SH2 between Wairoa River Bridge and Te Paeroa Road, near Wairoa Pa Road.

Shortly before 11am, a large tree had fallen on State Highway 2 at Bethlehem, between Te Paeroa Road and Wairoa Pa Road," says a police spokesperson.

"The northbound lane is temporarily blocked while the tree is cleared."

"Police and contractors are on site and the tree is in the process of being cleared," says a Tauranga Transport Operations Centre spokesperson.

Motorists are advised to take care in the area and expect a delay while the tree is cleared from the highway.
