Chip sealing works to take place near Katikati

Chip sealing will take place on Wednesday and Thursday as part of the State Highway 2 Waihī to Ōmokoroa safety improvements project.

The work will take place between 9am – 4pm on Wednesday April 26 and Thursday April 27 on the roundabouts at Rea and Tetley roads and Morton Road.

'Stop/Go traffic management will be in place at both roundabouts, so please allow extra time for your journey,” says a Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

'This work will help prevent moisture seeping into the sub-base under the road and causing potholes. Most of this work needs to happen in the warmer part of the day and can't be done overnight.

'When travelling through the sites, you will see the bitumen being sprayed, immediately followed by a truck pouring aggregate and then a roller on each ‘leg' of the roundabout. The traffic will be stopped during this process and released once the roller has passed over. These stops will be kept to a minimum.

'In the two days after the chip sealing, we'll use the traffic moving through the site to help embed the seal. You may notice the traffic lanes changing several times during this period: this is to allow the weight of passing vehicles to help compress the new seal.

'This also means we don't have to close lanes and use heavy rollers, meaning your journey through the site is less disrupted. Once the seal is properly compressed, we'll sweep the site of any loose chip overnight and reinstate the line markings.

'Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding while these important works take place.

'The above information is accurate at the time of release.

'Many of the above works are dependent on a number of factors, particularly weather, and may be postponed at short notice.

'For up-to-date information on road works, traffic, detours and delays, motorists are encouraged to visit the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website.”
