Update, 5.40pm: State Highway 29 Hinuera to State Highway 1 Piarere is now open following a serious two-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon.

The road has been closed between Hinuera Road and Hopkins Road with traffic diversions in place.

Two people were reported to be in a critical condition and three people in a serious condition.

SH29 has now reopened following the crash.

Update, 1.55pm: Emergency services are currently responding to a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 29, Matamata.

The crash was reported about 1.05pm.

Initial indications suggest two people are in a critical condition and three people are in a serious condition.

The road is closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area. Diversions are in place on Hinuera Road and Hopkins Road.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Earlier, 1.32pm: Emergency services are responding to the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 29 near Hinuera.

The crash was reported to police at about 1.05pm.

It is unknown at this stage whether there are any injuries.

"The road is closed between Hopkins Road and Hinuera Road," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

Motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

For Eastbound: Turn Left onto Hopkins Rd and then right onto Hinuera Rd to get back on SH29.

For Westbound: Turn right onto Hinuera Rd and left onto Hopkins Rd to get back onto SH29.
