The official holiday period has ended with a preliminary total of 21 deaths and a number seriously injured from crashes on our roads.
'Our thoughts go out to those people who are dealing with the very worst of circumstances," says Police Assistant Commissioner, Road Policing, Bruce O'Brien.
"It is completely unacceptable for 21 people to lose their lives in avoidable crashes over this year's holiday period, but unfortunately we're still seeing the same behaviours contributing to fatal crashes right throughout New Zealand and it's really disappointing."
Those behaviours are fatigue, impairment with alcohol or drugs, not wearing seatbelts, exceeding the speed limit, being distracted by cellphones or devices and sometimes drifting onto the wrong side of the road or rolling.
'Police have had many staff throughout New Zealand over the summer, doing impairment testing, he says.

"It comes back to responsibility for drivers themselves, their passengers and other road users because we've all got that responsibility when we're in the vehicle.
"Police can't be on every single road at every single moment so we really need people to take that responsibility when they get in their car because the absolutely devastating consequences that this has for families and friends that are left behind is just terrible."
'People are often travelling on unfamiliar roads at this time of the year and a moment's inattention could have catastrophic consequences, Assistant Commissioner O'Brien said.
Police's plea to people getting on the roads for the remainder of the holiday period is simple - we want you, and your family and friends to get home alive.
"Please, stay calm - treat the people in the cars around you like they're your own family.

Unfortunately accidents will always happen....on the roads and off the roads....and deaths will always occur. This is life and the Police fail to understand this. Condolences to all those involved.
tragic stupidity.

These were "avoidable". It's like we never learn. Modern driving requires your attention. ALL of the time. Cell phones, tiredness, road rage at other drivers, all have no place behind the wheel of your car. (I won't mention substances because that is too far beyond the pale, and only a small minority of VERY stupid people would even consider it.) Simply stop and take five if your mental attitude has been affected by observed behaviours on the road. Looking at the wrecks here, the degree of error was excessive. The Police say these were "avoidable" accidents; you'd have to be behaving very badly to cause such carnage. Condolences and sympathy, won't bring back lost loved ones. THINK when you are controlling the lethal weapon that is your car.

Pie in the sky. Responsibility has been taken from people. 'Other' people are even responsible for raising kids, the 'Justice System' doesn't acknowledge responsibility. Why is it going to be any different on our roads. Until actions once again have responsibility, it'll be a social death spiral.

Your point about responsibility is a very good one. We have allowed a "Nanny State" to impose woke PCism on us and to ensure that we don't need to be responsible for anything. Nothing is our responsibility any more. Don't work, Nanny will feed you. Have kids (whether you can afford to or not), Nanny will give you more money. Don't worry about school, Nanny will make sure you always succeed. Turn to crime? Nanny will give you a comfy cell and excuse you because of your upbringing. Just vote for Nanny and the Chiefs will look after you, just like back in the 19th century. But don't think for yourself or disagree with the Boss... That's not your place. Nanny will gradually take away your right to do that, purely for your own protection, you understand... Nanny is Wise, Nanny is Good; God Bless Nanny!
