Police aware of gang convoy

File photo.

Police have been monitoring gang movements travelling through to South Auckland for a tangi today.

"Officers have a highly visible presence in areas where we know gang members and associates are travelling," says a police spokesperson.

"Any unlawful behaviour will be investigated and followed up with enforcement action."

Police will maintain a visible presence on the roads and urge all those travelling on the roads to not act in a way that puts other road users at risk.

"If you are concerned about your safety in regards to the group, or witness illegal behaviour happening now, please call 111 immediately," says a police spokesperson.

To report, or send in any footage of the group causing concern, Police encourage the public to file a report online at 105.police.govt.nz, call Police on 105, or report anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-nz.org.

Any excessively noisey and therefore non warrent a fitnessable bike will be pulled over, stickered and put off the road along with a fine . . . If it was my car it would be instantly. Disorderly and/or threatening and/intimidating behavior I'd be arrested immediately yet the morons supposedly get investigated and supposedly followed up on. Perhaps a very small handful. Get a couple of paddy wagons and a couple of trucks to follow along and start a collection. These morons should not be allowed to travel in their packs for Tangi or anything. It's past time to get really heavy on these thugs. Like they do, forget about the PC crap. It's great our Police are there but action is needed not window shopping. Only problem is the mampy pampy Judges and the thumb sucking cultural and background reports. NO excuses, they know their actions are illegal.

You're right. They make their own rules and get away with it and they know they will. Their b@ll$ are too small to stand up by themselves, they have to prey on innocent people as groups of thugs with the stupidest names. Anyway dumbkof2, hope you had an awesome Christmas. A happy and safe New Year to you. I look forward to hearing from you here in 2023.

Have you been at the egg nog...? :-) (Your post seems a bit less coherent than is usual...) The fact is that the cops can't DO anything until someone breaks the Law. We don't have pre-emptive justice like that shown in films like "Minority Report"... Although they may be thugs, as you say, gang members are also people and citizens of our great country. It is a fundamental right to be able to grieve when you lose someone. I don't want to live in a Police State where people are guilty by association and the State can override basic Human Rights because somebody disagrees with how they behave. Let's have a "fair go" for everyone (including gang members at tangis) and limit enforcement to cases where it is blatantly obvious that the Law has been broken. When that is true, then it should be enforced firmly, swiftly, and consistently.

:-) Must say I burst out laughing straight away. That was a great opening line. I hear you and in a lot of ways agree with you and as people they most certainly do have the right to grieve. They do not however have a right to ride intimidatingly in packs with excessively noisey, illegal bikes and unfortunately this is the norm for them. No helmets, burn outs, pack behavior overtaking public places. We need to get tough on gangs and hit them every way legally possible. If they want to ride as a group of respectful motorcyclists and pay their respects to the fallen, so be it. No issues. The Police don't normally follow along keeping an eye on funeral proceedings and Tangis so they too were expecting illegal behaviors. When the law is broken then like you say, the law should be enforced firmly, swiftly and consistently.

Thanks for your positive wishes (which I reciprocate). I think we can all agree that bad behaviour by gangs is something we can easily live without. We just need to be aware that the Law is applied to ALL and it is applied fairly. Sometimes it is easier for cops to let a breach go (like a noisy bike) than it is to make an issue of it. I'm not condoning noisy bikes, I'm just trying to be pragmatic about it. Ask yourself what the difference is between a Motorcycle club and a gang... I think it is "illegal activities", and for that reason we need to watch gangs carefully (as police are doing.) We won't eliminate gangs until the fundamental reasons why kids join them are addressed, and that is still a long way off.
