Covid case spike: 6000 reported today

New Zealand has seen a spike in Covid-19 numbers - with 6000 cases reported today.

That is 1247 more cases than were reported last Tuesday.

Of the cases announced today, 26 per cent were reinfections.

The seven-day average number of cases now sits at 4041.

On Monday, the deaths of 58 people with Covid-19 last week were announced.

A total of 328 people with the virus were hospitalised - 10 in ICU.

Earlier this month, health officials held a media conference and said cases could skyrocket over the summer period.

Deputy Director-General of the Public Health Agency Dr Andrew Old says current modelling indicates cases could rise to a peak similar to that seen in July - between 10,000 and 11,000 cases per day.

He encourages people to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations, stay home if they are symptomatic, test if unwell and to open doors and windows as much as possible if they are entertaining over the summer months.

Old says there is also "good evidence that mask use reduces transmission".

The ministry will be publishing a "summer checklist" to help people prepare, he says.

New Zealand remains in a "strong position" to manage the ongoing Covid-19 cases but Old cautions: "We're not out of the Covid woods yet".

Nothing to see here...

We're all so fed up with it that we just want it to be gone. Unfortunately, ignoring it doesn't eradicate it. I keep a K95 mask in my pocket and put it on if I am in a place where people are not maintaining separation (and I avoid such places), without worrying about disapproving looks or comments. I've had COVID; I don't want it again. In particular, keep an eye on your kids because they are less aware of the dangers of simple interaction in play, and, while we can't stop kids playing with each other (and wouldn't want to) we do need to make sure that the risks are minimal. Hand washing and mask wearing should become a matter of course, and have RAT tests available if anyone starts showing symptoms. It will be hard through this Summer, but we need to stay aware...

Remember

So now covid runs amok without a word. Remember when the government wouldn't buy vaccines when they offered and we delayed six or more months for a drip feed. Then the people who lost jobs and businesses and we closed the entire country. A few cases in Auckland yet no one could work in the south. So even people working on their own with no contai where not allowed to work. Did we get hospitals ready well no we cancelled peoples procedures , scans tests etc. So we borrowed and printed money . So here we are today thinking what was it all about . All just catching up on vaccines that were politically delayed . Not a squeak now and no longe a team Jaccinda , divisions everywhere

Still

At least we finally got to be able to test ourselves at home again after months of unnecessary delays obtaining a drip feed of RATS. Sadly the whole experience still Total cases 1,950, 000 cases later and Total 2,212 deaths. marks out of ten for management ...well

Well, that's a far cry from your earlier stance. I do recall you saying everyone should be walking around masked up and that you wouldn't be removing yours until cases were below 100 per week. It's good to see that you have finally seen it for what it is. And Kancho is spot on - the way this Government overreacted with mandates and so forth can now be seen for what it was - Police State authoritarian abuse that you normally associate with the likes of China and Russia. No wonder Ardern is off to see President Xi. No doubt giving him some tips on how to crack down on protesters and reminiscing about Chairman Mao.
