With four of New Zealand's first-class cricket teams separated by just a single point at the top of the Plunket Shield championship ladder, today's third round brings an invitation to break away into the outright lead.
Four of the six matches so far have ended in an outright result, Canterbury, the Otago Volts, Wellington Firebirds and Central Stags all with one victory under the belt.
Defending champion the Auckland Aces are meanwhile urgently seeking their first win, having suffered two consecutive home defeats before heading into their first away fixture in the lively capital today.
The Central Stags have asked Northern Districts to bowl at Nelson's Saxton Oval; the Wellington Firebirds are batting first after the Auckland Aces won the toss at the Cello Basin Reserve; and Canterbury has won the toss and asked the Otago Volts to bat in the direct top-of-the-table clash at Hagley Oval - where a big early wicket has already fallen.
Statchat:
• It's a special occasion for visitors Northern Districts in Nelson as they play their 500th overall first-class match, while hosts the Stags have named promising 19-year-old Manawatū batsman Curtis Heaphy on Central Stags and first-class debut.
• Northern Districts and BLACKCAPS star Neil Wagner heads to Nelson requiring 12 wickets to reach 800 first-class wickets (overall first-class career). BLACKCAPS and Central Stags spinner Ajaz Patel is approaching 300 first-class wickets (on 289, overall career).
• Canterbury and BLACKCAPS rock Tom Latham is approaching the landmark 10,000 first-class runs on 9,833. BLACKCAP and Wellington Firebird Tom Blundell is on 4,832 runs, nearing the 5,000 runs milestone. BLACKCAP and Central Stag Will Young is nearing 7,000 first-class runs with 6,818 and allrounder Doug Bracewell (Central Stags) is on the verge of his 4,000th first-class run with 3,965 (all overall career).
• Central Stags wicketkeeper Dane Cleaver is approaching 200 first-class career dismissals (overall career; excludes catches Cleaver has taken in the field).
