The Bay of Plenty region has been rattled by an earthquake this morning.

A 2.7 magnitude quake with a focal depth of 2km struck in the Kawerau region around 9.14am.

GeoNet is reporting it was felt in Kawerau and surrounding Eastern Bay of Plenty areas.
