Convicted rapist: Request to block internet denied

A Tauranga District Court judge has declined an application by the Corrections Department to block internet access for convicted rapist Jayden Meyer.

It comes after fake online posts that appeared to be of Meyer mocking his sentence were taken down last week.

Corrections Deputy Regional Commissioner for the Northern Region, Ali Rei, says Corrections will continue to monitor him extremely closely.

She says he's already subject to 20 court-imposed conditions, including that he hands over any device capable of accessing the internet on request.

Meyer, 18, was charged after multiple police complaints by young women in Bay of Plenty who alleged sexual violence across 2020 and 2021.

An investigation followed, resulting in 10 charges including four of rape, four of sexual violation, and two of doing an indecent act.

There were five young female victims, four of whom were raped and one who was sexually violated.

Meyer was sentenced to nine months' home detention and a further 12 months of post-release conditions, including a ban on associating with anyone under 16 and attending a sexual violence prevention programme.

Pathetic sentence

As a rape victim myself, 9 months home detention is a pathetic charge. It took me 3 years to tell my story and go through the process of taking it to court. And that was out of fear that no one would believe me and he would get away with it. I can sympathise with Meyers victims and I can say that the judge that handed down the sentencing made the wrong call. Meyer knew what he was doing.. and he did it more than once. He preyed on young girls and got them intoxicated before raping them. 9 months for that!!! You get more time and locked up for growing weed!

Block His Internet

Block his internet for sure. If he was given a real and justified sentence (like the real sentence he's given others) then he'd have no internet, limited meals, limited phone, limited hot drinks . . . But no - wait . . . He got an absolute pathetic so-called sentence. Under 3yrs so is automatically halved, post conditions that are standard and will he be put on the sex offender register? Sitting at home all day with luxuries, nice bed, probably a play station etc, mates visiting whenever they want to . . . Unbelievable, Labor give/allow sentences like this and then have the audacity to tell us how serious crime is down, prison numbers are down.
