MetService has updated the heavy rain watch issued for the Bay of Plenty east of Whakatane on the night of Wednesday, July 27.

The updated rain watch is valid for three hours from 9am to 12pm today, July 28.

"A period of heavy rain with thunderstorms is possible. Rainfall amounts may approach short term warning criteria, especially about the ranges," says a MetService spokesperson.

"Note, heavy showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening.

"People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made, or further areas are added."
