Rain expected to ease across North Island

Morning rain is expected to ease for the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Northland and Auckland regions today.

WeatherWatch are forecasting gusty northwesterlies will ease in the evening and rain will move into Northland overnight.

Highs for these regions are expected to be between 15-17 degrees Celsius.

WeatherWatch are reporting that a couple of low centres are straddling the South Island today.

"Expect more cloudy weather with rain or showers," says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.

"Rain should ease for the eastern South Island. Overnight a low coming out of the Tasman to the northwest brings rain into the western North Island."

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain eases to showers in the afternoon with northwesterlies freshening, winds strong for coastal Taranaki. Rain moves back into Taranaki overnight.
Highs: 11-16

Eastern North Island
Any morning spots of rain clear then becoming mostly sunny, northwesterly winds. Wairarapa has rain spreading from the west, easing afternoon, winds stronger.
Highs: 14-19

Wellington
Rain eases to showers in the morning with southerlies tending northwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning rain clears then dry with sun breaking through in the afternoon as northwesterlies freshen. A few showers may continue to pass into Nelson from the west.
Highs: 14-16

Canterbury
Mostly cloudy with patchy showers or drizzle, quite a few dry areas may develop from afternoon. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 6-14

West Coast
Mostly cloudy with rain north of about Greymouth, in the afternoon rain or showers moves in further south. Winds eventually tend to the north or northeast.
Highs: 11-14

Southland & Otago
Rain, easing from afternoon for Otago. South to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 9-10
