Severe weather warning for northern and central NZ

A front is forecast to move slowly southwards over northern and central New Zealand during Monday and Tuesday, according to MetService. This front is preceded by a broad band of rain, with some heavy falls, and northeast gales.

The largest rainfall accumulations are likely from Northland to Bay of Plenty, also Marlborough and western Tasman. Northeast gales are likely from Northland to Bay of Plenty, and also for Buller, severe at times across Northland and Auckland.

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

People are advised to keep up to date with forecasts as further areas may be added, and some watches may be upgraded to a warning.

Northland
Valid: 27 hours from 6:00 pm Sunday to 9:00 pm Monday
Forecast: Expect 120 to 160 mm of rain to accumulate about northeastern areas from Whangarei to Kaitaia, and 60 to 90 mm of rain elsewhere. Peak intensities of 15 to 20 mm per hour Monday afternoon and evening.

Auckland from Whangaparaoa northwards, also Great Barrier Island
Valid: 21 hours from 3:00 am Monday to 12:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Expect 80 to 100 mm of rain to accumulate. Peak intensities of 15 to 20 mm/hr Monday night.

Coromandel Peninsula
Valid: 22 hours from 7:00 am Monday to 5:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Expect 120 to 160 mm to accumulate, peak intensities of 15 to 20 mm/hr Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

A strong wind warning has been issued for the following areas:

Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures.Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Northland
Valid: 16 hours from 12:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday
Forecast: Severe northeast gales gusting 120 km/h in exposed places.

Auckland including Great Barrier Island
Valid: 19 hours from 7:00 am Monday to 2:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: Severe gale northeasterlies gusting 110 km/h in exposed places.

MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for the following areas:

Auckland south of Whangaparaoa
Valid: 21 hours from 5:00 am Monday to 2:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: A period of heavy rain, rainfall accumulations may approach warning criteria.

Bay of Plenty from Kawerau westwards
Valid: 22 hours from 12:00 pm Monday to 10:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: A period of heavy rain. Expect 120 to 160mm of rain. Peak intensities of 15 to 20 mm/h Tuesday morning.

Bay of Plenty east of Kawerau, and Gisborne from Ruatoria northwards
Valid: 15 hours from 9:00 pm Monday to 12:00 pm Tuesday
Forecast: A period of heavy rain, rainfall accumulations may approach warning criteria.

Tasman, about and west of Motueka
Valid: 16 hours from 3:00 pm Monday to 7:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: A period of heavy easterly rain, rainfall accumulations may exceed warning criteria and this may be upgraded to an Orange Warning closer to the event. Note, further rain is likely in this region
through the remainder of Tuesday.

Marlborough
Valid: 19 hours from 8:00 pm Monday to 3:00 pm Tuesday
Forecast: A period of heavy easterly rain. rainfall accumulations may approach warning criteria, especially about the Kaikoura Ranges.

Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty
Valid: 12 hours from 6:00 pm Monday to 6:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: Northeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

Eastern Waikato
Valid: 16 hours from 11:00 am Monday to 3:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: Northeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places,especially near the Kaimai Range.

Buller
Valid: 13 hours from 4:00 pm Monday to 5:00 am Tuesday
Forecast: Easterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
