Good morning, and welcome to Sunday! Ko te ra tenei i hanga e te Ariki. Ka koa tatou, ka koa hoki ki reira.

MetService are forecasting a mostly cloudy day with occasional rain, clearing by evening. Light winds, then a gusty southeast change in the afternoon which could be perfect for some Matariki kite flying.

It's a two-clothing-layer day with an expected high of 17 degrees, and an overnight low of 8 degrees. High tide is at 11.02am and low tide at 5.04pm. Sunset is at 5.04pm.

What's on today?

Peter Clark's Disney kites are expected to be flown at the Matariki Kite Flying day at Fergusson Park, Matua from 12pm - 4pm. Photo: Supplied.

Visit the Tauranga City Libraries Facebook page to find out if the event is going ahead due to poor weather.

In celebration of Matariki, Tauranga City Libraries and the New Zealand Kite Flyers association present the annual Matariki Kite Day.

Connecting heaven and earth, kites were traditionally flown at Matariki to send karakia to those that had passed and to send wishes for the future to the heavens. So wrap up, bring your whānau, a hot chocolate and a kite of your own down to the beach side of Fergusson Park to join in on the winter festivities. There will also be food stalls and a children's activity space. If flying your own kite, please ensure to keep it out of the association fly space.

This event is being held from 12pm - 4pm at Fergusson Park, 90 Tilby Drive, Matua, Tauranga, and is subject to change due to weather impacts. More information on this event can be found here.
