Second Links Avenue cul-de-sac trial starts

The second trial of the highly debated Links Avenue cul-de-sac is now underway.

Following last year's trial and community survey, Tauranga City Council Commissioners indicated their intention to proceed with a second trial at the Concord Avenue end of Links Avenue, beginning this week.

Last month, Council adopted a plan to trial a cul-de-sac on Links Avenue for four months, in a move that will also involve removal of the bus lane and the inclusion of a 30km per hour speed limit.

Resurfacing work began on the road earlier this month.

This followed a previous trial that ran for five weeks from November 2021, which was met with protests from some residents regarding a lack of consultation.

The intention of the trial, according to Council, is to improve safety along the road, especially for school children.

The previous trial placed the cul-de-sac at the intersection of Ascot Road nearest to Golf Road.

However, the new trial sees the cul-de-sac placed at the Concord Avenue end of Links Avenue, at Solway Place.

'All vehicles will be able to access Links Avenue Reserve via Golf Road or Spur Avenue,” TCC's director of transport, Brendan Bisley, told SunLive earlier this month.

'At Concord Avenue - buses, bicycles, motorbikes, emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles, and marked taxis will be able to enter and exit Links Avenue.

'All feedback from the first Links Avenue trial, including time-based restrictions, was considered to form the recommendations for the second trial.

'To most accurately understand the impact it would have on the community and local network, the cul-de-sac will be in place 24/7.”

The latest cul-de-sac trial on Links Ave began on March 28 and full details on TCC's plans can be seen here.

Two changes made

So there have been two changes made! The removal of the third lane and a new roundabout. Assuming success with the trial it will be hard to determine which factor achieved it.

Hmmm

What are they trying to achieve...? Children who are evidently unable to understand road safety are only a traffic hazard for a few hours each day and only during term times (In two weeks time we have another holiday) Some residents are complaining about lack of accessibility and I was witness to large numbers of motorists ignoring the last trial. I hope we're paying the council tinkering team well for their efforts.

Do you really believe that the council staff will be 100% honest with the ratepayers? They have never been honest in the past so why will they change their attitude on this expensive shambles? The whole exercise it totally unnecessary and definitely not wanted by the majority but they still insist that they carry on this stupid trial. They refuse to offer the accident statistics for Links Ave because there are none and they have been struggling to come up with an honest answer for wasting our money. It's all a big power game and the ratepayers are the pawns.

What

Is the cost to Ratepayers so far? Would like to know.

Every single person at TCC I've met, or interacted with has been passionate, cared about this city and been trying to do the best for everyone. A hard job for anyone, caught in the middle of a city that is divided on just about everything. Your attacks on these people are uncalled for and something that I would hope any social platform will start to pull into line.

Not safety related

It's obvious TCCs reasoning for this trial is a lie. Once traffic volumes go above 10,000 vehicles per day this road will need to be asphalt. This trial is just to reduce traffic volumes so they can keep on using cheaper chip seal option and reduce costs.
