Mixed reaction to Luxon tax promises

The National Party's promise to scrap all the new taxes introduced by Labour since coming into power has been met with both praise and scepticism.

Party leader Christopher Luxon zeroed in on the cost of living in his State of the Nation speech at the weekend, promising to raise income tax thresholds.

Business New Zealand Kirk Hope chief executive gave the policy the thumbs up.

"Hearing that attitude coming back into politics that politicians do trust businesses is a really important message for a lot of people who have been doing it pretty hard," says Kirk.

"In terms of practical application of the bracket changes I think those are really, really important for working New Zealanders."

The lowest tax bracket of 10.5 per cent would rise just over $15,600 the 17.5 per cent threshold would go up $53,500 and the 30 per cent to $78,100.

This would mean those earning $45,000 would have an annual tax saving of $112, those on $55,000 would save $800 and those on $85,000 would save more than a grand.

Minister of Finance Grant Robertson says the tax cuts would just lead to important services being cut and drive inflation.

However, Infometrics Principal Economist Brad Olsen says any suggestion the policies would lead to a slashing of services was not strictly true.

"It is always challenging to balance the Budget, but the government has also given itself a rather large pot of money going forward that is essentially being repurposed under this policy," says Brad.

He argues it also would not increase inflation because the money will still be spent - by individuals rather than by the government.

However, he notes lower-income earners will get the least benefit.

"They might well need additional targeted support be that tax credits, benefit increases or similar. We know everyone is feeling stressed at the moment and there are more steps that need to be taken," he says.

Among the taxes on the chopping block was the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax.

Auckland mayor Phil Goff says money to fund the region's transport system needed to come from somewhere.

Much of the revenue gathered funded the eastern busway, which Luxon's electorate directly benefited from, says Goff.

"If we lose the hundreds of millions of dollars from the regional fuel tax going there we will either need to stop the project going ahead, or we will need to put a 20 percent rate increase in," he says.

What National was proposing would hit poorer Aucklanders - who relied on public transport - hardest, he says.

Mixed reaction?

So the independent business leader and the independent economic expert gave it a thumbs up. The thumbs down came from Grant Robertson and Phil Goff! Not really a mixed reaction - more a predictable partisan reaction from the thumbs down camp.

I was looking for something other than what we have had before but did not find it. It seems to come from the same old playbook. Those on higher income will benefit most.

National

The last time we had National in power education and health suffered with spending in those areas cut to post big surpluses. We even gave John Key a knighthood. We were also told we do not have a housing crisis. Tax cuts as always will benefit those at the top which is the "Mantra" of any National government

I wonder how long Aucklanders will continue to pay the extra 10c per litre on fuel...? How many can still remember what it was being collected for after all these years...? Labour is known to tax and spend, the current issue is where, when and why they are spending it and how many votes they expect to buy by doing it...? No matter how hard I work, I don't seem to be the target of public spending or government grants. In fact my favourite hobby of going for a drive and spending money around the country makes me undesirable and libel for extra taxes and reduced services in favour of lycra clad eco-warriors.

Fantastic news

Everything this Government has done has been all talk and no action apart from hiking taxes. They've failed at pretty much everything they've said they would do. Everything is costing more from Rates to food to petrol. These Socialists are the worst Government of the modern Era. They've prevented thousands of New Zealanders their basic fundamental right to return home yet allowed sportspeople and entertainers into the Country and that's just plain wrong. Chris Luxon is a breath of fresh air and lacks the hippocampus of Ardern and her Cronies. Labour is wrecking this Country and good riddance to them.

Auckland Fuel Tax

Is an interesting one as in some places in Auckland I can buy my fuel cheaper than Tauranga. Mobil Chapel Street used to be a great deal but is now one of the most expensive in the Bay. Why?
