Government to deliver Budget on May 19

New Zealand's annual Budget will be delivered on Thursday, May 19, 2022.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson says a key focus would be on planned health reforms and meeting climate change goals.

"It would be irresponsible to acknowledge that our health system needs improvement, based on the lessons from Covid, but then not doing anything about it.

"Just as it would be equally reckless to just say 'let's forget about climate change for a year or two'. These are investments that we need to make as a country. We can't afford not to make them."

In the December budget policy statement the government said it would commit an extra $6 billion one off allocation to pay for the major policies.

Robertson says "careful and pragmatic" approach was being taken with the Budget.

"This means we will not be able to fund all the projects that are proposed and we will have to prioritise within our objectives.

"We will strike a balance between the important projects that need to be done and the ongoing need for fiscal sustainability."

A mess, high inflation huge borrowing, printing money but we will fund 6 billion for green projects etc . Sallies says housing is now a catastrophe with 25,000 on urgent the housing list . Child poverty and harm still our biggest shame. Petrol prices 52 percent taxes , food prices and get rises , rents all rising to hurting the poor, stress on employment costs and business viability.. So the no more taxes promise ? Ute tax no its a levee to take away money from productive farmers and trades to give to rich people buying EVs . 3 Waters pushed through a really huge cost bureaucracy growth and no idea whether it's going to work or is really needed. Another kiwibuild in the offing ? dire need we need more bike lanes and talkfests.. Blaming poor policies all on covid doesn't wash

LOL, good one

I dont even think Labour has a clue what a budget is, do you ? Where has all the money gone for Covid and we have less beds in ICU and 1400 less staff. You think that budget worked ?

Loonies

New Zealand has borrowed / printed more money during Covid than ALL countries apart from the US. And they can because they have the World’s primary currency. What do we have to show for it? Apart from hyper inflation. Left wing Governments true to form.

Predict Vote buying lolly scramble

I predict a winter of discontent but the usual stretched out vote buying policies late in the year or into next year. Labour ideology forcing through policies that will add confusion without good results and following there general lack of actual delivery . Meanwhile the country unravelling with failing economy and inflation and their people already suffering at a most basic level more of the same or worse. Sad , not going to be a good year for many

Staggering.

Do whatever will win votes and print the money to cover it. $6 billion for the environment, and families still sleeping in their cars... Sadly, the world has started to recognize that our currency is worthless, so we go into the spiral of savings destroyed by inflation, and imported goods priced beyond reach. But we've still got billions to keep He Puapua running and force unelected members onto Councils and committees (as long as those members support Labour, of course...). There's always enough money for a politically expedient project, but don't bother us with trivia like roads or housing or Democracy, or Covid testing kits...or things important to the farmers and battlers who make up most of the population. Kancho's litany of disaster is all too true. This government has to go...
