Clothing sale exceeds hopes

Nearly $1800 was raised to help build houses for the homeless in Cambodia at this week's massive $2 clothing sale in Mount Maunganui.

The fundraiser, put on by women from Tauranga and Papamoa Venus Business Women's Referral Networks, ran on Thursday night and attracted more than 100 people who came searching for a bargain.

The women's goal was to raise $1200 for a team of people heading to Cambodia this month, with locally-run charity, Breakfree Expeditions, where they will build eight homes in two days.

Charity founder Diana Judge is overjoyed with the fundraiser's success and says the money will be enough to fund one home and a donation to The Princess Project – an overseas charity tackling human trafficking.

'I was absolutely thrilled with the result; we succeeded the target we wanted to.

'I was astounded when those doors came open at 7.30pm, I was like ‘Oh my gosh, where did all these people come from'.”

She says after Thursday night's sale, they only had one carload of clothes left, which was purchased in bulk on Friday morning for a further $200.

She also received a donation of four boxes of Havaianas jandals.

Diana says she will definitely look at organising another sale later in the year, when an all-women team will travel to Mexico to furnish a single mother's home.

'Just a huge thank you to the donors and the people who bought stuff.”
