Ruby Frost at Major Tom's

Ruby Frost performed songs from her debut album Volition at MajorTom's in Mount Mauganuil Wednesday night.

Ruby provided an intimate evening of synth-infused pop performed in her delicate personal style.

If you're unfamiliar with the artist think contemporary Kate Bush, with a Kiwi accent. You might recognise Ruby as the former music reporter for the Erin Simpson Show or you might know her radio-friendly tunes like Porcupine or Water to Ice or Moonlight.

Ruby says she thinks of her sound as quirky theatrical pop.

'My parents always played in bands and I've enjoyed writing music since being little. The first album took two-and-a-half-years to produce and I'm really pleased it's out.”

Universal have signed the songstress and sent her New York to complete the album with producer Chris Zane.

Chris is a highly regarded producer working with established stars such as Passion Pitt.

Volition means the act or power of using one's own will.

'I wrote most of the songs after a really bad break-up. I found the experience very therapeutic.”

'My music is influenced by people like David Bowie, so it's quite cool to be playing at Major Toms tonight. I also really like Bjork. When I heard her I thought yay, it's okay to have a weird voice. Until then I was worried I should sound like Mariah Carey or American soul singers.”

Volition is available from I-Tunes and select retailers.
