Strong winds, heavy rain and snow falls are expected to come this week with coastal flooding warnings in place for the Bay of Plenty.
A complex weather system is expected to coincide with a high king tide tonight, posing the risk of coastal flooding.
Heavy rain and high king tides are expected to cause coastal flooding.
Media and Communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett says the Metservice is expecting heavy rain and strong winds on one side of the weather system and bitterly cold air with snow on the other.
The main area of rain and strong winds will spread across northern and western parts of New Zealand today.
Daniel is advising travellers and holiday makers to keep an eye on the weather situation over the next several days.
Sky watchers are also being told to keep updated on the forecast for Wednesday's Transit of Venus, which may be affected by the predicted weather, says Daniel.
