Main benefits to increase in line with wages

Main benefits are set to increase by 3.1 per cent on April 1.

Social Development and Employment Minister Carmel Sepuloni says the increase is in line with the rise in the average wage.

The Government announced changes to the annual adjustment of main benefits in Budget 2019, indexing main benefit increases to the average wage, rather than the Consumer Price Index.

'This is the Government's second annual adjustment based on increases in the average wage, making it fairer on low income families and helping reduce poverty amongst our most vulnerable,” says Sepuloni.

'Around 385,000 families and individuals will be better off getting more than double the annual increase they'd have received using the old Consumer Price Index measure. For example, a couple with children could get $13.24 more Jobseeker Support a week from April 1, in line with the average wage increase.

'Under the previous system indexed to the CPI increase of 1.15 per cent, they would receive only $4.95. The changes aligned main benefit adjustments more closely with Superannuation which has been linked to average wage increases for decades."

The 830,000 New Zealanders receiving Superannuation will also receive the same 3.1 per cent increase on April 1.

'Combined with this Government's 1 April changes to income abatement thresholds, helping incentivise those who are working to remain in work, underlines our promise to help low income New Zealanders," says Sepuloni.

'This is another step towards lifting wages and making our welfare system fairer so that people and families on benefits don't fall further and further behind other New Zealanders."

Can we do something about the culture these benefits have created whereby some people choose to just stay home all day and make more babies($generating units) please? That would be good. Thanks Less issue taken with more money for our elderly. But when society is reaching retirement age without enough money to survive on without govt assistance. Something is wrong here too.

There is a difference between "fairer" and "fairer". One is equal. The other is not. If I was a Doctor. Is it then fair to pay the kid flipping burgers at B.K the same rate? Because that is what is happening with benefit increases. Even worse they create a dependency. David Lange had a good quote.. something to the effect of... The NZ military and social welfare are similar, except the military isn't as able to cause wide-spread damage.

Vote-buying labour style. Reduce taxes for workers and you wouldn't need to rebate them through WFF. This is rewarding people for having children they can't afford.
