The third and final lecture for the Pukehinahina Summer Lecture Series 2021 at St. George's Anglican Church, Gate Pa, is now confirmed.
On the last two Sunday evenings a total of about 300 people have been treated to two wonderful talks as part of the annual Pukehinahina lecture series.
At 7pm on Sunday, February 14, the Rev Dr Hirini Kaa will be speaking on He Tiriti Mihinare / An Anglican Treaty.
Hirini, of Ngati Porou, Ngati Kahungunu and Rongowhakaata, is an historian and Anglican minister, like family members before him, and kaiarahi -Maori and Pacific Advisor - in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland.)
'In this lecture Hirini will explore how, from its beginnings, Maori and Pakeha have had different responses to our founding document: politically, socially, legally, even militarily,” says a statement released about the event.
'However, the differing faith perspectives on the Treaty/Te Tiriti are enlightening. We will explore these contrasts, particularly as displayed by Mihinare and Anglicans.”
Last year Hirini published 'Te Hahi Mihinare | The Maori Anglican Church” - a ground-breaking book exploring the emergence of Te Hahi Mihinare – the Maori Anglican Church, from a Maori perspective. In particular he explores the ways in which Mihinare - Maori Anglicans - engaged with the settler Anglican Church in New Zealand and created their own unique Church casts light on the broader question of how Maori interacted with and transformed European culture and institutions.
Hirini has worked in the social services sector, for the Anglican Church, and for his iwi. As Kaiarahi for the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland, he leads innovative projects to embed Maori and Pacific values in teaching and the faculty.
Hirini has extensive television experience including presenting, researching and co-writing the seven part historical documentary series 'The Prophets' for Maori Television, which explored Maori prophetic movements from an Anglican perspective.
Hirini continues to be sought out for commentary on a range of critical topics across different media outlets.
St George's Church operates with the kaupapa of "let everyone who enters here be reconciled".
These lectures are offered by the Anglican Parish of Gate Pa to help the community understand the nation and city's history and how it shapes the present.
A koha – donations will be collected at the door to help cover the costs.
All lectures are at St. Georges Anglican Church, corner of Cameron Rd and Church St, Gate Pa, on the hill next to the Mega Mitre 10.
