Road reconstruction work will be carried out on State Highway 2, near the intersection of Work Road from Tuesday, February 9.
Waka Kotahi Transport Agency says this is being undertaken to improve safety at this intersection and will include permanent closure of the northbound passing lane.
A wide shoulder will be retained for slow vehicles.
The existing passing lane will initially be closed between 9am and 4pm during the works with intersection improvements expected to be completed by early April.
The passing lane will then be permanently closed.
Closure of the passing lane was identified as a safety improvement during the design phase of Section 8 between Wright Road and Morton Road.
Road reconstruction work will also be undertaken on SH2 between Willoughby Road and Lindemann Road from Tuesday, February 9, from 7am – 7pm.
"We will maintain two-way traffic flow when possible, with periodic stop/go activities in place until the end of these works which are expected to be completed in early March," says a NZTA spokesperson.
"Minor delays are expected, however, we will monitor traffic queues during the stop/go operations and clear these regularly.
"These works are in Section 6 of the Waihi to Omokoroa Project safety improvements, between Kauri Point Road and Lindemann Road.
"Other works along this SH2 corridor include ongoing shoulder widening between Kauri Point Road to Lindemann Road, Sharp Road to Sargent Road and Wainui South Road to Esdaile Road.
"Please take extra care, reduce your speed and follow directions of traffic management staff and signage."

Break out the red flags

Why bother to fix the roads properly? Lets just revert to 1865. "The most draconian restrictions and speed limits were imposed by the 1865 act (the "Red Flag Act"), which required all road locomotives, which included automobiles, to travel at a maximum of 4 mph (6.4 km/h) in the country and 2 mph (3.2 km/h) in the city, as well as requiring a man carrying a red flag to walk in front ... Info from Wikipedia. The trouble with this, is it is too difficult to reach 6.4 KPH on this road. Stop wasting money with this crap & fix the bloody road properly. Build it to suit 2021 & beyond
Increase the speed limit

Increase the speed limit to 120kph. Everyone will get to where they are going twice as quick. You will be on the road for half the time, meaning traffic congestion will reduce by 50%. Either that or FIX THE BLOODY ROAD
