Maori wards are a Treaty right

Mike Lally's objection to Maori wards [The Weekend Sun, January 15] is not rational.

It is not rational because Mr Lally completely ignores the Treaty of Waitangi.

We have Maori seats in Parliament because of the Treaty which is now NZ law and establishes the legal partnership between Maori and the Government. That is NZ Law.

Maori electoral wards are simply a Maori Treaty right to active participation in local government. They are not a special privilege for Maori. They take nothing from non-Maori.

The Treaty guarantees racial justice for NZ, and anybody who ignores the Treaty is rejecting racial justice.

Finally Mr Lally says that we should have one set of rules for everybody, but he ignores the rule that we honour the Treaty of Waitangi. That is not rational.

While I respect people who relate to being Maori they are not the people they were back in the 1800s or before, the gov't decided there is a partnership with Maori, it is not in the treaty, fact, this is just more separatism and racial favour like separate, health, education, sports teams, tv and everything else based on a race that I might add you don't even have to prove you are actually Maori!

Peter Dey you need to read what crazyhorse says. He has got it right and you are so wide of the mark on Treaty issues. Ask him if he will teach you about the treaty
