UPDATE 7.32PM: An investigation is underway into the cause of a building fire in Tauranga.

Firefighters were called to the two storey building fire on Cameron Road, near 4th Ave, just before 6pm.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Paul Radden says the fire is now out and crews are working on dampening down any hot spots.

"The fire is now extinguished and we just have one truck on the scene.

"It is under investigation."

Residents in the area says a section of Cameron Road was closed for a bit while fire crews battled the fire.

They are now reporting the road is open.

UPDATED 6.40PM: A fire is burning at a two storey commercial premises on Cameron Road.

The building near 4th Avenue is well involved in fire, says Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications shift manager Paul Radden.

'We've currently got four trucks in attendance. The fire has been extinguished on the first floor, they're just extinguishing the second floor now.”

Paul says he is not aware of any people inside the building at the time of the fire.

FENZ were called to the fire around 5.45pm and the cause is unknown as yet.

EARLIER: Reports are coming in of a fire at a commercial premises on Cameron Road.

A police spokesperson says they were called to help with traffic management at a building fire on Cameron Road.

Police were called to assist at 5.50pm and the building is on Cameron road between 4th and 5th Avenue.
