Meal kit company Hello Fresh has advised customers not to consume fish in its latest meal kit due to potentially 'elevated histamine levels” in the trevally.
In a text message and email, Hello Fresh told customers the affected batch was delivered this week for the 'coconut fish and makrut lime sauce with jasmine rice and crispy shallots” recipe.
'As a precautionary measure, we would advise you not to consume the product...and will be providing a refund of the cost of the ingredient,” the message says.
Hello Fresh has been approached for comment.
The recipe was described as 'eat first” for customers who had it delivered over the weekend.
High levels of histamine in seafood can cause a scombroid poisoning, where a cluster of symptoms such as itching, rash, nausea and vomiting are caused by bacteria on fish which may not have been chilled properly.
The Ministry for Primary Industries says on its website symptoms could last for up to 12 hours but there were no long-term effects.
MPI says it is important to pay attention to how fish was stored and in the case of shellfish, where it was collected.
