UPDATE: State Highway 25 is closed as firefighters battle a large scrub fire near Whangamata.

Emergency services are at the scene of the fire, which is near Onemana, by the corner of Toko Road.

Local radio station Gold FM says the fire is reported to have started in the trees by the side of the road.

The fire is reported to have jumped the highway, forcing the closure by authorities.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Craig Dally says it is now classified as a third alarm fire, which means crews from around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty have been called in to assist with the blaze.

Two helicopters are also at the scene.

Thames/Coromandel District Council says Tairua Road, State Highway 25 (near Jullian Drive) between Whangamata and Onemana is closed due to a large wild fire.

'The road is closed between SH25A Hikuai and Harry Watt Drive, Whangamata.

'Civil Defence advise everyone to please stay away.”

Council warns that' some nearby residents may experience power outages.

State Highway 25 is blocked as firefighters battle a scrub fire near Whangamata.

Gold FM are reporting on their Facebook page that emergency services are at the scene of a fire near Onemana by the corner of Toko Road.

'A fire that's thought to have started in trees is now blocking SH25,” says a post on the radio station's page.

'Motorists are warned to avoid the area at present.

"Fire trucks from around the district are assisting and two helicopters have been deployed to the fire."
