Organisers of the sailing open day at Sulphur Point are putting Plan B in action to replace the possibility of trips out to see the trimaran Team Vodafone, which is being kept away by the latest Rena spills.
Stuart Pedersen says they're disappointed not to have Team Vodafone coming.
'This was always just the catalyst for us to put together an open day, not the focal point.
'The yacht club members have rallied around and come up with other activities for families who come down between 12pm and 2pm on Good Friday.”
The club will have a range of gear set up on the day, including a windsurfing simulator which kids can try.
Stuart says there will also be radio control yachts as well.
'We're also hoping to have some of the more experienced club sailors ready to take kids out for a short sail in a sailing dinghy or a racing catamaran.
'So if you're keen, bring togs and towel, and a wetsuit if you have one. We have lifejackets.”
The event is a joint effort between the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy trust (BoPSAT) and the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club (TYPBC).
'BoPSAT is a charity which aims to make sailing more accessible to youth in the Bay. The yacht club has a proud history of developing top young sailors and we're passionate about building on that,” says chairman Stuart.
'We're inviting kids aged 8 to 18 down to find out about the learn to sail courses we offer, have a look at the sailing pathways that kids can take, meet some of the key people, and try some things onshore. Getting out on the water will be a bonus.”
The open day will be running from 12pm to 2pm on Good Friday and is free.
Stuart invites people of all ages to come down and enjoy the day.
