Know a green success?

Environment Minister Nick Smith is calling for nominations for this year's Green Ribbon Awards.

The awards were set up by the government to recognise the achievements of New Zealanders dedicated to protecting and improving the environment.

Nick says the nominations should show how the work of an individual or organisation has contributed measurable environmental benefits.

He says nominated organisations or individuals need to have demonstrated innovation, going the extra distance and raising awareness of environmental issues.

This year, the awards include a new category recognising the green economy.

'The concepts of green growth and the green economy have been gaining momentum internationally since 2008.

'The green economy is one of two main themes for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio +20, being held in June this year in Rio.”
Nick says the government is focused on growing the economy and creating new jobs and there are real opportunities in the environment area for smart new businesses to create wealth and jobs by better use of natural resources, recycling and reducing pollution.

He says this new award recognises these green economy opportunities.

'The Green Ribbon Awards showcase the inspiring achievements of New Zealanders who are dedicated to protecting and improving our environment.

'These awards are the government's way of acknowledging their work and saying thank you, on behalf of all New Zealanders.”

The winners will be announced on June 5 to coincide with World Environment Day.

Entries for the Green Ribbon Awards close on March 23.

Boycotting the Rio conference . . .

would be a good start. This will be just another jaunt for politicians and their flunkies, travelling no doubt in greenhouse gas unfriendly business class and staying hotels which claim to be green because you have the option of not changing your towel daily. Conferences should be held via the internet, the truly environmentally friendly way to share ideas and reach decisions.
