Close finish in dinghy boat race

It came down to waterline length in the final of the Omokoroa Boat Club dinghy rowing races held during the recent open day.

The three man race finished in order of water line length of the respective dinghies with the longest rowed by John Budden first, followed by Max Laver and Steve Willoughby.

Protest flags would be flying if they had masts, some of the close action in the men's dinghy race.

Commodore Phil Cox started the event from the jetty, and the two rescue craft acted as escorts to the pontoon off the boat yard.

At the pontoon, John established a small lead over Max and Steve and built on this on the way back to the shore.

The result was John first, followed by Max and then Steve. The club reports Steve is commissioning a new boat for next year's race.

In the ladies event Rachel Laver in a recently completed dinghy competed against

Andrea Willoughby in a ‘mature' craft.

They were neck and neck to the mark, with Rachael gaining a small lead on the return leg to beat Andrea to the shore.

The Junior event was rowed by the boat club's three Sea Scout helpers over a short course to the Bay Of Plenty Regional Council buoy and back

Starters were Zachery Chisam, Tim Williams and Liam Hansen. Various styles of boat handling were displayed in a close fought struggle that saw Zach take the win followed by Tim and Liam.

Shields will be engraved and plaques awarded at the annual prize giving.

Reminder to bring life vest, sun block and sunhat.

Sunday, February 12

The keelers and trailer sailers advertised Motiti Island race will not be taking place because of the Rena.

With the high tide at 11:26am in Tauranga, even a Karewa sail is out because of a two metre tide both ways.

There will still be a 9am briefing at the club but with the midday tide, it could be three short events around the buoys.

All will be finalised at the briefing.
