‘Mixed views’ on $20.4m Elizabeth Street plans

There are mixed views in regard to the Elizabeth Street ‘linear park' initiative, says Tauranga City Mayor Greg Brownless.

The Tauranga City Council's Projects, Services and Operations Committee met in council chambers on Tuesday, and one of the topics discussed was the proposed new developments on Elizabeth Street, which is expected to cost $20.4 million.

Isthmus associate landscape architect Travis Wooller and team leader of public spaces at the Tauranga City Council Doug Spittle were questioned by council members in regard to the project.

The final draft of the Elizabeth Street concept design can be found on the Tauranga City Council's website. The designs by Ithmus include halving the street width to create the linear park.

The plan states the new space is going to 'increase the cities green space and create a pedestrian and cycle priority street, while facilitating vehicular movement and parking”.

Greg says he and other councillors think something should happen on Elizabeth Street, but they're not convinced what is being proposed is what will go ahead.

'Farmers are putting a huge investment in the area, and they pay for the development contribution fee, which is more than $1 million.

'I think we could look at doing something initially outside Farmers, because they are investing, and council should invest there, but to do the whole street, I'm cautious about that.”

Greg says he voted for the proposal to go ahead to the next stage where stakeholder discussions between elected members and Elizabeth Street business owners will take place.

He hopes the discussions take place during this term.

'With the big investment from Farmers, and the contributions they have made through the development, we owe them a nice streetscape outside their premises.

'But for the whole street – maybe you wait until people decide to do up their buildings there before you go and do the rest.”

Greg says $20.4 million is a lot of money, and if business owners don't want it, there is no point in going through with the plans.

'The business owners won't want a huge disruption that goes on forever, so let's get to the next stage and talk to them, see what can or can't be done.

'However I do think the area outside Farmers is something that needs to be done, and while we are doing that we might as well talk to the people across the other side of the road and see what they feel.”

Council spending

The mayor and councillors must love spending money

This is madness!

Haven't TCC woken up to the fact that Tauranga people love their cars? We don't like walking and we certainly don't like to pay inflated prices for parking our cars! Look at the present "Sunlive" poll. 50% of the people think it is too late for the CBD to bounce back! This proposed madness not only puts the nails in the city coffin but is paying for a white elephant to sit on the lid!! GET REAL!

Who Benefits

A little hard to see how this will benefit most ratepayers....... I am sure the usual big spenders will want this i.e Baldock, Molloy and Clout. Those not standing again should not be involved.

Does the Council

want the CBD to continue to die? It's not a pedestrian area it's the southern access to the CBD and if outdoor recreational areas are needed, clear the waterfront and use that. If the public are continually hampered in attempting to get into town by more and more vehicle access restrictions, the council will continue to be the problem killing off the CBD. Just stop wasting millions of things the city doesn't need, stop turning the retail traffic away and sort out what really matters. This ISN'T it.

bikes & pedestrians don't mix

I am concerned that the proposed plans for Elizabeth St have people biking where people are walking. As a person with some physical disability, I have found that bikes are my biggest problem on footpaths. They go too fast and they expect pedestrians to jump out of their way. It has come to the point that I do not walk on "shared" footpaths. Tauranga is meant to be a city friendly to older people for whom many walking is the only exercise they can do or afford. Bikes on footpaths is not safe for anyone with a disability. Please keep bikes and pedestrians separate.

Maybe not now

The idea may have merit, but at the moment TCC has a large debt load and it is costing ratepayers a small fortune in interest. I think Council should put this on hold for the moment and revisit it when our finances are in better shape.

STOP NOW

It is time to consolidate what we have. CBD is and will be a construction zone for too long. Baycourt parking is diabolical now. Durham Street is a classic example of stupidity. How long has the construction been going on. Perhaps a look at how many workers should be on site may be the answer to the delay. Excuses of not knowing where services were is poor and the same will happen with Elizabeth Street. Get the CBD back to where people can move around and not walk on carpet, rough areas. Those planning need to either get off and look at suburban roads that are covered in water after rain instead of wanting to have.

Please, Please

Do not allow any of the design team who botched up Greerton or the Phoenix revamps to be involved. There will be cost over-runs close to 100% of the original build costings. Better to clear the cars from the waterfront and give this whole area back to the people as a family safe zone.
