Fresh oil on Papamoa Beach

Maritime New Zealand says shoreline clean-up assessment teams have identified fresh oil at Papamoa East.

The team has recorded small spots of oil measuring up to 2cm and stretching over 2km of coastline.

Teams are on the beach assessing how best to clean the oil.

MNZ says an observation flight over the Rena this morning has confirmed no significant change to the state of the two parts of the wreck.

The organisation says there also appears to be less oil leaking from the vessel.

Container recovery and oil spill response work will continue today, and wildlife teams will be out checking for any affected wildlife.

MNZ says rough seas around Astrolabe Reef are subsiding and the swell is starting to ease with the forecast predicting one to two metre swells on Sunday.
