An earthquake with the depth of 5km has struck the Matata area in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

The quake registered 3.5 on the richter scale and struck 10km north of Matata around 4.20pm yesterday.

GeoNet science reports the quake may have been felt in Matata and there have been no reports of damage.
