The New Zealand Transport Agency's decision to pay $6.6 million for a new bridge across Reid's canal on State Highway 2 near Edgecumbe is Welcomed by Environment BOP.
EBOP Chairman John Cronin
Replacement of the 76 year old bridge will complement recent work done by the regional council on its flood protection scheme, says Environment BOP chairman John Cronin.
"This week's heavy rain and resultant flooding has again shown us just how important it is to ensure we have effective transport links throughout the region and that we're prepared for natural disasters, such as floods," says John.
NZTA regional director for the Bay of Plenty Harry Wilson says the higher bridge means new approaches will be needed. Ramps up to 300m long on each side will be built, making the new bridge more than two metres higher than the existing structure. It'll also be 3.8m wider, providing a safer environment for all road users.
The new bridge will provide more floodway clearance for the canal, and be built to withstand a one-in-1000 year earthquake. The NZTA expects construction to begin mid-2011 and take about a year to complete.Funding was approved on Friday.
