Book enthusiasts and Christmas shoppers are treated to special literary guests at Bethlehem Paper Plus today to get shoppers into the Christmas spirit.
Twelve local authors are in store to talk about their latest books, and also offer advice, tips and insight into the world of writing. Amongst those authors are Peter Blakeway (who also cooked up a barbeque), Julian Fitter and Nana Gaye.
Authors Lee Murray, Anaru Bickford, Peter Blakeway, Ian Clarke, Candice Paewai (Werohia) and Steffi Mueller.
In festive costume, shop assistants fit with the Christmas theme and Santa's sleigh also made an appearance for the children.
The store was buzzing with visitors and shoppers, proving books and personal stationary are still a big hit this Christmas.
Pin the nose on Rudolph was popular entertainment for the younger ones.
Store owner Donna Gardener says she is very happy with how book sales are shaping up this year, with a few popular titles always on the best sellers list.
Despite the development of e-readers and iPads, Donna says they just provide another format to enjoy books, rather than signaling the death of the book.
'I take my iPad everywhere with me when I travel, but I love to buy and collect books to read at home – like trophies lining my book case. Books also make excellent gifts for family and friends over Christmas that are inexpensive and always enjoyable.”
The local authors are in store until 1.30pm today.
Authors Karen Tobich and Peter Blakeway start the barbeque.
