Caring for the coast

About 35 volunteers, mainly from Karewa Parade and surrounding streets participated in the Coast Care dune planting project in Papamoa on Sunday.
They planted 1500 plants, mostly spinifex, but also some pingao and hinarepe, a rare native sand tussock.

Nine year old James Hunter and friend Liam McGovern, 10, enjoy the Coast Care dune planting.

Coast Care coordinator Pim de Monchy says the area planted was in front of Marjorie Lane and the eastern end of Karewa Parade.
Last week decaying weeds and debris in the area were piled up and removed to make way for the new plants.
There are still 18,500 plants to be planted in the area, with the next community planting on Sunday, June 13 from 9.30am till midday.
