Residents in the Bay of Plenty can expect more rain today and tomorrow as a frontal system is lying over the northern parts of the North Island.

It is set to be a wet start to the week, as rain is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday as well, before clearing up on Thursday.

MetService Meteorologist Mark Bowe says Tauranga is experiencing periods of rain.

'Behind that you can expect showers for the rest of the day.

'So our forecast for Tauranga is we are talking about showers and there is a chance that they could be heavy and thundery, just in behind that front.

'The air is a bit unstable for the afternoon and evening periods and there is a risk of thunderstorms in the Tauranga area.

Looking at the weather tomorrow, Mark says it will be another wet one.

'There will be a few showers, with the chance of it being possibly heavy and thundery again.

'It is a similar story for tomorrow's weather, unfortunately, so you are not going to be able to escape the rain just yet.

'And I'm afraid that on Wednesday, there will be some afternoon showers, with a chance that they may be heavy.

'So it really is a wet start to the week for you guys but on Thursday it will be a bit better and we are expecting it to be just fine,” says Mark.

The temperature is expected to reach 28 degrees on Thursday and 29 degrees on Friday.
