Pilgrims, Kingston Flyer and the weather

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a fine day but showers are possible from the afternoon. Also westerlies.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 24 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 90 per cent.

Low tide is at 12.20pm and high tide at 6.20pm(Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.5m and sea temperature is 21 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.32pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 10.30am and 12.30pm..

On this day in NZ history in 1964 New Zealand whalers harpooned their last victim. More than 170 years of New Zealand whaling history ended when J.A. Perano and Company caught its last whale off the coast near Kaikōura.

In 1971 it became full steam ahead for the Kingston Flyer. A few months after the last steam locomotives had been withdrawn from this country's scheduled rail operations, New Zealand Railways launched a new tourist-oriented steam passenger venture in the South Island.

On this day in world history in 1620 the Pilgrims landed at or near Plymouth Rock.

In 1790 Samuel Slater opened the first cotton mill in the United States (in Rhode Island). In 1862 the U.S. Congress authorized the Medal of Honor to be awarded to Navy personnel who have distinguished themselves by their gallantry in action.

In 1910 over 2.5 million plague victims were reported in the An-Hul province of China.

In 1946 an earthquake and tidal wave killed hundreds in Japan. In 1964 Great Britain's House of Commons voted to ban the death penalty.

In 1986 500,000 Chinese students gathered in Shanghai's People's Square calling for democratic reforms, including freedom of the press.

In 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York exploded in midair over Lockerbie, Scotland, an hour after departure. All 259 passengers were killed in the explosion caused by a bomb– hidden inside an audio cassette player — that detonated inside the cargo area when the plane was at an altitude of 31,000 feet. A shower of airplane parts falling from the sky also killed 11 Lockerbie residents.

Today is the birthday of Jane Fonda, actress, political activist, and exercise guru. Born in 1937 she once said 'It's never too late - never too late to start over, never too late to be happy.”
