In today's weather forecast we are expecting showers, possibly thundery with hail from the afternoon. Also light winds.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 21 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 90 per cent.

High tide is at 11.10am and low tide at 5.30pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.8m and sea temperature is 19 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.26pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 4 and 6pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1961 was the first Golden Kiwi draw. Tickets went on sale for New Zealand's new national Golden Kiwi lottery. All 250,000 tickets sold within 24 hours, with the £12,000 top prize (equivalent to around $500,000 today) four times that offered in previous lotteries.

On this day in world history in 1901 Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic radio transmission in St. John's Newfoundland.In 1927 Communists forces seized Canton, China. In 1930 the Spanish Civil War began as rebels took a border town.

In 1943 the German Army launched Operation Winter Tempest, the relief of the Sixth Army trapped in Stalingrad. In 1964 Kenya became a republic.

Today is the birthday of French novelist Gustave Flaubert. Born in 1821, he once said 'The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.”
