Joseph Parker, Nobel Prize and the weather

In today's forecast we are expecting the weather to become cloudy with showers developing from the afternoon. Also sea breezes.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 26 and an overnight low of 16 degrees. Humidity is 84 per cent.

High tide is at 9.50am and low tide at 4.10pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.3m and sea temperature is 19 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.24pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1908 Rutherford won a Nobel Prize. Ernest Rutherford's discoveries about the nature of atoms shaped modern science and paved the way for nuclear physics. Albert Einstein called him a ‘second Newton' who had ‘tunnelled into the very material of God'.

In 1962 Maurice Wilkins won a Nobel Prize. New Zealand-born Maurice Wilkins and his colleagues James Watson and Francis Crick shared the prize for their studies on the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the genetic molecule found in all organisms.

In 2016 Joseph Parker won the world heavyweight boxing title. The 24-year-old South Aucklander of Samoan descent became the second New Zealand-born holder of a recognised world professional boxing title by outpointing Mexican Andy Ruiz.

On this day in world history in 1898 the United States and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris, ceding Spanish possessions, including the Philippines, to the United States.

In 1917 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the International Red Cross.

In 1919 Captain Ross Smith became the first person to fly 11,500 miles from England to Australia.

In 1993 the Wearmouth Colliery in Sunderland, East England, closed, marking the end of the County Durham coalfield, which had been in operation since the Middle Ages.

Today is the birthday of American poet Emily Dickinson, who wrote more than 1,000 poems, seven of which were published in her lifetime. Born in 1830, she once said 'If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain.”
