The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is continuing to monitor the Orini Channel in the Eastern Bay of Plenty following a bitumen spill at about 9am.
The council's communications manager, Bronwyn Campbell, says a truck carrying about 20,000 litres of bitumen overturned on State Highway 2, near Edgecumbe.
She says the material leaked into the Orini Channel.
'Our pollution prevention team attended the accident along with emergency services.
'Bunting was placed at either end of the channel to contain the tar and is being removed with a sucker and digger.”

Was the cause of the crash a bit too fast round the bends there ? Not the first truck to go off round that area and surely won't be the last.........
