A school staff member said four people were treated.

None were seriously injured and they were all adults.

It's been reported that the lightning strike has left burn marks on the grounds of the school.

According to the MetService, a severe thunderstorm watch is in place for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

"Showers, some heavy and may come with thunder with hail. Northwesterlies," the weather organisation says for the Hamilton region.

Tauranga's weather forecast doesn't look much different with few showers, possibly thundery with hail, easing at night, being forecast.
