Lightning strike causes power outage

Power is out in the Matamata area after a lightning strike.

Power has gone out in Matamata after a lightning strike.

According to the Power Co website it says the power outage has affected 56 properties in the area.

This comes after MetService has predicted a second large low will cross over the North Island in the next 36 hours bring more rain.

MetService are predicting for some more heavy showers later this afternoon and evening, with the chance of them being heavy with thunderstorms.

The Bay of Plenty's forecast for tomorrow isn't looking much better with showers and the chance they could be heavy.

A thunderstorm watch has also been put in place for the Northland area. Thunderstorms with heavy rain are forecast in Northland this evening and overnight.
