The Tauranga City Council is reporting a sewer main near Windermere Drive is leaking, resulting in an ongoing sewer overflow that may affect the Waimapu Estuary.
The pipeline is in dense scrub and swamp area making it difficult to access and repair quickly – repairs might take at least a week.
This particular rising main cannot be shut off because it forms a critical part of the wastewater network.
The council is reducing flows as much as possible by using tanker trucks to transport wastewater away from the area.
Although the sewer main is functioning at a reduced rate it will continue to overflow at times until repairs can be made.
Water quality tests have been taken to assess the extent of the overflow.
As a precaution, health warning signs have been placed around the estuary as far as Turret Road.

It wasnt that long ago that the sewer system in these areas had a qaurterly mowing and inspection program. Must have been over looked by our beloved council saving money, or is it the maintainence contractor saving money. I so love paying my rates !
TEST THE AFFECT ONLY

Look for the Southern Pipeline, it is coming your way and is massive in comparison to this little wee pipe. When the Southern pipeline bursts and it is a case of 'when' not 'if' then the Habour will "run red" with that as it is pumped untreated into the habour and that will be nice and handy from the CBD.

All the proper rules have been broken on this one and ratepayers will be saddled with some $200 million of debt just for the pipe alone, we don't even need it, why would you cart crap 15kms along the habours water edge to the other side of town?
