Martians, Enigma and the weather

Today's weather forecast should feature sunny spells. We are expecting showers, mainly from the afternoon, when some could be heavy.

Also brisk westerlies, changing to southeast in the evening.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 10 degrees. Humidity is 80 per cent.

High tide is at 11.40am and low tide at 6pm. There's a sea swell of 0.3m and sea temperature is 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 7.43pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is tomorrow morning between 5.30 and 7.30am.

This day in NZ history in 1865 the Native Land Court was created. The Native Land Court was one of the key products of the 1865 Native Lands Act. It converted traditional communal landholdings into individual titles, making it easier for Pākehā to purchase Māori land.

In 1918 a massive prohibition petition was presented to Parliament. Prohibition supporters presented Parliament with a petition containing more than 240,000 signatures demanding an end to the manufacture and sale of alcohol in New Zealand.

In world history on this day in 1918 Turkey signed an armistice with the Allies, agreeing to end hostilities at noon, October 31.

In 1925 Scotsman John L. Baird performed the first TV broadcast of moving objects. In 1938 H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds was broadcast over the radio by Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. Many panicked believing it was an actual newscast about a Martian invasion.

In 1942 Lieutenant Tony Fasson, Able Seaman Colin Grazier, and canteen assistant Tommy Brown from HMS Petard boarded the sinking submarine U-559, capturing code books that would help British code-breakers at Bletchley Park crack the German naval 'Shark” Enigma cipher.

In 1974 the 'Rumble in the Jungle,” a boxing match in Zaire that many regard as the greatest sporting event of the 20th century, took place; challenger Muhammad Ali knocked out previously undefeated World Heavyweight Champion George Foreman.

In 1985 the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off for its final successful mission.

Today is the birthday of John Adams, second president of the United States who helped draft the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Paris, ending the American Revolution. Born in 1735, he once said 'Old minds are like old horses; you must exercise them if you wish to keep them in working order.”
