A man has been arrested following an incident in Welcome Bay overnight.

A police media spokesperson says the incident took place near Waipuna Park in Welcome Bay at about 8pm.

"An off-duty police officer reported a sighting of a vehicle being sought by police.

"Police attended and took one man into custody."

A Welcome Bay resident says a number of police officers were at the park.

"Police had closed the entrance to Waipuna Park.

"Up to eight police cars were in the car park and they were all surrounding a vehicle.

"People going into the park were turned around."
