Bay of Plenty on-board with nationwide fuel strike

A boycott of fuel stations nationwide got underway earlier today, and Bay of Plenty residents are joining the action.

Thousands of motorists throughout the country have pledged their support online for the boycott, which asks for no fuel station to be entered for the duration of today and tomorrow.

The boycott action stems from a Facebook event listing, which was created earlier this month.

More than 18,000 people have confirmed their participation on the page, with another 20,000 expressing an interest.

The organisers say the action is a way of taking a stand against the New Zealand petrol industry.

The event post reads: 'If you are able to, please also consider refraining from entering a petrol station all of the weekend. But definitely no petrol on the event date.”

SunLive has contacted a number of Tauranga fuel stations this morning in light of the boycott, all of whom agree it is business as usual.

However, a number of motorists are claiming they have noticed a sudden drop in price overnight.

One Rotorua woman, Rangihuia Woods, says she has noticed a drop in prices at her local stations.

'As I was going past the Te Ngae petrol stations this morning, I noticed gas was all of a sudden $2 per litre," she says, "but I held true to the kaupapa and won't be getting gas until Sunday.”

A Tauranga resident, who only wishes to be known as Mia, says her local fuel station also has noticeably less customers.

'First thing in the morning this station is always full, but today it was empty,” she says. 'I've noticed a few cars later through the morning, but they're not queued up like usual.”

The boycott is taking place amongst ongoing criticism which accuses the government of piling on extra fuel taxes, when prices at the pump are already inflated.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made a vow in Parliament that there would be no more regional fuel taxes under her leadership.

Ardern and National leader Simon Bridges engaged in a spirited exchange about the high cost of petrol when the Prime Minister rose to her feet to make the pledge.

"I can give this guarantee to this house and to consumers, there will be no other regional fuel taxes while I am Prime Minister," she said.

The only way this is going to have any effect is if people USE NO FUEL for a couple of days. Very few people buy fuel every day of the week, so all this means is that they will buy it on a different day. The really sad thing is , that if they USE NO FUEL for a couple of days , it will be a success story for the Greens at least and possibly the rest of the government . So following that logic, the Polis and their advisors will decide that if some people decided to USE NO FUEL for a couple of days because the price went up.they will put it up further. It's just how civil servants think...!

Don't let it go to your head, this wont sway the Seven Sisters

The price of gas was down for the last few days because Gull was having it's monthly discount day, from Thursday 7am until Friday midday.....It happens every month, AND the other stations within driving distance always try to match the Gull price.....
