Sixty years of jandals and the weather

In the weather forecast today we are expecting a partly cloudy day with a chance of afternoon showers. Also light winds and afternoon sea breezes.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 17 and an overnight low of 9 degrees. Humidity is 95 per cent.

Low tide is at 8.40am and high tide at 3pm.(Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of 0.2 metres and the water temperature is 15 degrees. Sunset today is at 7.18pm.

If you're going fishing, the next best fish bite time is 8-10pm.

In NZ history on this day sixty years ago in 1957 Morris Yock trademarked the jandal. Inspired by footwear he had seen in Japan, businessman Morris Yock and his son Anthony began manufacturing this simple rubber footwear in their garage in 1957. The name ‘jandal' combined the words ‘Japanese' and ‘sandal'.

In world history on this day in 1905 Orville Wright piloted the first flight longer than 30 minutes. The flight lasted 33 minutes, 17 seconds and covered 21 miles.

In 1917 the Battle of Broodseinde took place near Ypres, Flanders, as a part of the larger Battle of Passchendaele, between the British 2nd and 5th armies and the defenders of the German 4th Army; it was the most successful Allied attack of the Passchendaele offensive.

In 1927 Gutzon Borglum began sculpting the heads of four US presidents on Mount Rushmore.

In 1957 Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite, was launched, beginning the 'space race.” The satellite, built by Valentin Glushko, weighed 184 pounds and was launched by a converted Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). Sputnik orbited the earth every 96 minutes at a maximum height of 584 miles. In 1958, it reentered the earth's atmosphere and burned up.

Today is the birthday of Edward Stratemeyer. Born in 1862, he was an author and creator of the Hardy Boys, Rover Boys, Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins.

It is also the birthday of writer and futurist Alvin Toffler. Born in 1928, he once said "You've got to think about big things while you're doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction."
