All Blacks, moon walking and the weather

In NZ history on this day in 1888 the New Zealand Natives team played their first game in the UK. The privately organised rugby team was the first to wear the silver fern and an all-black uniform.

In world history on this day in 1906 the first conference on wireless telegraphy in Berlin adopted SOS as a warning signal. In 1929 the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes officially changed its name to Yugoslavia.

In 1940 the U.S. Army adopted airborne, or parachute, soldiers. Airborne troops were later used in World War II for landing troops in combat and infiltrating agents into enemy territory.

In 1985 the Space Shuttle Atlantis made its maiden flight. In 1990 after 40 years of division, East and West Germany were reunited as one nation.

Today is the birthday of Charles 'Charlie” Duke, the youngest astronaut to walk on the moon (1972). Born in 1935 he once said "My walk on the moon lasted three days. My walk with God will last forever."
