Model T, comets and the weather

In the weather forecast today we are expecting fine spells with a chance of light showers, then occasional rain developing in the evening. Also northwesterlies are expected.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 12 degrees. Humidity is 84 per cent.

High tide is at 12pm and low tide at 6.20pm.(Tay Street times). There's a swell of 1m and water temperature is 15 degrees. Sunset today is at 7.15pm.

If you're going fishing, the next best fish bite time is 5-7pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1923 the first Chatham Cup football final was held at Athletic Park, Wellington. Seacliff from Otago defeated Wellington YMCA 4-0 in the first final of the Chatham Cup, which has become New Zealand football's longest-running and best-known national club competition.

In 1962 a Government watchdog was appointed. Sir Guy Powles was New Zealand's first Ombudsman. In a loose translation from Swedish, the word means ‘grievance person'. The office was created to investigate complaints about government departments and other national public sector organisations.

In 1986 the Goods and Services Tax Act was imposed. Adding 10 per cent to the cost of most goods and services, GST was a key part of the economic reforms of the fourth Labour government – dubbed ‘Rogernomics' after Minister of Finance Roger Douglas.

In world history on this day in 1847 Maria Mitchell, an American astronomer, discovered a comet and was elected the same day to the American Academy of Arts—the first woman to be so honored. The King of Denmark awarded her a gold medal for her discovery.

In 1908 the Ford Model T, the first car for millions of Americans, hit the market. Over 15 million Model Ts were eventually sold, all of them black.

In 1949 Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China.

In 1957 'In God We Trust” appeared on US paper currency as an act to distinguish the US from the officially atheist USSR; the motto had appeared on coins at various times since 1864.

In 1979 the US returned sovereignty of the Panama Canal to Panama.

Today is the birthday of Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the U.S. (1977-1981). Born in 1924 he once said 'I have one life and one chance to make it count for something... My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.” He also said 'Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries.”
