Fresh from his player of the tournament-winning heroics for Bay of Plenty's champion Jock Hobbs Memorial under 19 tournament team, Kaleb Trask, is straight back into the Steamers fold.

His return couldn't be better timed for the senior Bay outfit, which is in need of a new fullback after a knee injury ruled the mercurial Chase Tiatia out for the next few weeks.

Trask will slot straight into the 15 jersey for their crucial Championship division Mitre 10 Cup clash tomorrow night with Waikato at Rotorua International Stadium, and he's planning on bringing in some of the adventurous spirit he enjoyed in the under 19s environment.

'It was a lot of fun,” he says. 'We got to go out and play some fun rugby and didn't have to worry about anything, just have fun with your mates.”

He believes that unencumbered mindset played a big part in their 35-30 title-winning victory over Canterbury in the Jock Hobbs Memorial final.

'Yeah I think so, it definitely helped. It just gave the boys a licence to play and express themselves, and show everyone what kind of talent they've got.

'Canterbury came at us and had some good firepower, and scored a few tries at the start. And then we came back with some flairy tries I guess, just our kind of style of play.”

Trask himself played a big part in the turnaround, showing some real determination to get over the line to ignite his team's effort, but he downplays his contribution.

'I just had an opportunity and I took it. Then it was just back to trying to get back down the other end of the field after that try and score some more points.”

And score more points they did, with Kohan Herbert and Cole Forbes getting over the line and Trask himself adding a second.

Canterbury being the rugby powerhouse they are though kept pace with the baby Steamers, and with the clock ticking down scores were level at 30-all and extra time was looming. Until wing Jayjay Suemai produced a piece of instinctive magic, grabbing a Canterbury pass and nailing the match-winning try.

'It was amazing,” Kaleb says. 'Everyone was stoked. We didn't really expect it to happen – I actually thought they were going to make a break down field and he just kind of plucked it out of the air and won us the game.

'Definitely a team effort, everyone pulled their weight and everyone expressed themselves.”

For Kaleb, pushing hard for a Super Rugby gig is the long term plan, as well as putting his hand up once again for another campaign with the New Zealand under 20s in next year's world champs in Argentina.

But for now, helping the Steamers get back on the winning track and push on for the Mitre 10 Cup Championship division playoffs, beginning tomorrow night against Waikato, is the priority.

'All the boys are keen to get out there and everyone's hungry to get a win this week so hopefully we can come out with one.”

And he can't wait to run out on his hometown track in Rotorua for the match.

'Yeah it's very special. There's an extra bit of support out there, everyone yelling my name, so it's good fun.”

The match kicks off at 7.35pm tomorrow at Rotorua International Stadium, and is preceded by the Bay of Plenty Volcanix taking on Taranaki in the Farah Palmer Cup at 5.05pm.
